Moroti Adegboyega wins Stockholm Junior Water Prize for plastic-removing robot
Canadian student Moroti Adegboyega has won the 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for developing Ecoferroquatics, an AI-powered autonomous robot designed to remove plastic from water. The system utilizes biodegradable ferrofluid—a magnetic liquid—and magnets to selectively target and extract plastic debris without harming marine life. In testing, the technology outperformed conventional methods like simple sieves, particularly in collecting microplastics.
The award was presented by Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden during a ceremony at Stockholm City Hall as part of World Water Week. The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is a leading international competition for innovators aged 15 to 20, involving participants from over 30 countries.
European Commissioner Jessika Roswall praised the initiative, noting the importance of giving young people a voice in shaping the future of water resilience. Additionally, Laura Ivánka from Hungary received the Excellence Diploma during the event.
