CRPE: France's teacher recruitment exam undergoes reform

The CRPE (Concours de Recrutement de Professeur des Écoles) serves as the official national recruitment process for primary school teachers in France, covering both public and private schools under contract. Following recent reforms, the exam structure and access requirements have changed.

Candidates can access the profession through three main pathways: external, internal, and a third competition. The external pathway now features two distinct levels based on academic qualifications. The bac+3 level requires a license or an equivalent RNCP-recognized title, while the bac+5 level requires a Master 2 degree or enrollment in the second year of a Master's program. The selection process involves written exams in French, mathematics, and application, followed by an oral evaluation of pedagogical skills through a lesson and a jury interview.

Initial teacher training is now conducted through the National Higher Institute for Teaching and Education (INSPE), which replaced the former IUFM. Meanwhile, labor unions such as the FSU have expressed opposition to recent reform projects, arguing that they threaten the professional status and training quality of educators.
