Candidates can access the profession through three main pathways: external, internal, and a third competition. The external pathway now features two distinct levels based on academic qualifications. The selection process involves written exams in French, mathematics, and application, followed by an oral evaluation of pedagogical skills through a lesson and a jury interview.

Initial teacher training is now conducted through the National Higher Institute for Teaching and Education (INSPE), which replaced the former IUFM. Meanwhile, labor unions such as the FSU have expressed opposition to recent reform projects, arguing that they threaten the professional status and training quality of educators.
