CRPF considers restoring Lance Naik and Naik ranks to improve promotions
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is considering the reinstatement of the Lance Naik and Naik ranks, which were abolished in 1997. The proposal aims to address promotion stagnation among the force's approximately 3.25 lakh personnel, where constables currently face delays of 22 to 25 years before receiving their first regular promotion.
Under the proposed structure, which mirrors the Indian Army, personnel would receive intermediate promotions after approximately five and ten years of service before reaching the rank of Head Constable. This move is intended to boost morale and provide clearer career progression.
CRPF headquarters has directed field formations to conduct consultations, including through Sainik Sammelans, to gather personnel feedback by October 18. Additionally, the restructuring is viewed as a way to make service in the CRPF more attractive for Agniveers retiring from the military under the Agnipath scheme.
