CRPF forms high-level group to address rising suicide rates

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has established a 10-member high-level core group to address a five-year high in suicides among its personnel. Led by Director General G. P. Singh, the group will conduct monthly reviews of self-harm incidents to identify risk factors and strengthen preventive measures.

Data indicates that the force recorded 59 suicides in 2025, the highest annual figure since 2021. Over the five-year period from 2021 to 2025, the CRPF registered 262 suicides, with more than 77 per cent occurring while personnel were on duty. More than 80 per cent of these deaths involved constabulary and non-gazetted ranks.

In a related legal development, the Telangana High Court upheld the termination of a CRPF constable diagnosed with mixed anxiety and depression. The court noted that the Review Medical Board recommended termination due to the inherent stress of training and the high risk posed by easy access to firearms, which could endanger the individual and others.
