CRTC mandates improved cellphone coverage reporting for Canadian carriers
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has announced new rules requiring wireless carriers to provide more detailed reporting on cellphone coverage. The initiative aims to provide consumers with more accurate maps that reflect actual service availability and signal strength, including outdoor signal intensity at various power levels.
Under the new regulations, customers will be able to report locations where official coverage maps do not align with their actual experiences. These reports are intended to help identify connectivity gaps and improve the accuracy of the National Broadband Map, which is maintained using data provided to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
CRTC Chair and CEO Vicky Eatrides stated that improving how coverage is reported and allowing citizens to flag gaps will help build a clearer picture of national connectivity and support targeted investments. The new reporting standards are scheduled to begin rolling out with the next Annual Facilities Survey in early 2027.
