CRTC to implement Canadian content rules for streaming services

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is proceeding with the implementation of regulations regarding Canadian content on streaming services. This move follows tensions in trade negotiations with the United States, where U.S. opposition to these rules contributed to the end of talks.

The CRTC aims to determine how streaming platforms will ensure Canadian programming, including French-language content, is both available and discoverable to audiences. This process is part of the 2023 Online Streaming Act, which mandates that streamers facilitate the visibility of domestic content. Rather than imposing universal requirements immediately, the regulator intends to work with individual streamers to develop tailored rules.
