Oil markets react to Middle East tensions and G7 reserve release

Global oil markets are experiencing volatility driven by a combination of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and strategic supply interventions. While Brent crude has fluctuated around the $100 mark and WTI near $90, prices have faced downward pressure due to increased regional exports and the G7's decision to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel from strategic reserves over the next four months.

Despite the recovery in Middle Eastern crude exports—which, excluding Iran, reached over 81 percent of pre-war levels in September—security risks remain high. Recent attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, including an incident involving a Panama-flagged vessel that injured 12 crew members, have maintained a geopolitical risk premium in the market. Additionally, shipping costs and insurance premiums remain elevated due to these maritime threats.

Industry leaders have issued warnings regarding long-term supply stability. Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser noted that global oil reserves have depleted to alarming levels, suggesting that it could take years to replenish them. Meanwhile, UBS has revised its Brent price forecasts upward, citing the impact of disrupted shipments and declining global stocks, which fell by approximately 507 million barrels between March and August.
