Cruise industry defends reputation amid environmental and overtourism concerns
The European cruise industry, which contributes 65 billion euros to the economy and supports over 445,000 permanent jobs, is facing increasing scrutiny regarding environmental impacts and overtourism. In a discussion on 'The Big Question', MSC Cruises CEO Gianni Onorato addressed these criticisms, noting that the sector represents less than 2% of global travel packages for 2025.
Regarding overtourism, Onorato pointed out that in cities like Barcelona, cruise passengers account for only approximately 3% of daily visitors. To assist local economies, cruise lines plan itineraries up to two years in advance, providing more predictability for small businesses than the airline industry. The sector is also working to mitigate environmental concerns through new technologies and cleaner fuels while managing a shifting demographic, with the average passenger age now falling between 35 and 54.
