Cruise industry sees new luxury ship launches and sustainability shifts

The cruise industry is experiencing a period of significant expansion and technological transition. New luxury vessels are entering the market, such as the Explora I, the inaugural ship for Explora Journeys (a sister line to MSC Cruises), which debuted in Copenhagen. Additionally, Emerald Cruises launched its luxury yacht, Emerald Sakara, from Athens.

Parallel to this growth, the sector is facing increasing pressure to improve its environmental record. While the industry aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, progress remains gradual. According to Cruise Lines International Association data, the number of ships capable of using onshore power rose from 55 in 2018 to 166 in 2025. Companies like Hurtigruten are investing in technical upgrades, including biofuels and battery-hybrid technology, with the goal of achieving emission-free operations by 2030.
