Cruise Industry Sets Record Passenger Numbers, Growth Projected Through 2029

The global cruise sector has rebounded strongly after the pandemic, with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reporting more than 37 million passengers embarked in the most recent year – the highest total ever recorded. Industry analysts forecast that passenger counts will exceed 38 million this year and could surpass 42 million by 2029.

The United States remains the largest market, accounting for over 20 million cruise departures, while Germany is the second‑largest with nearly three million travelers. The sector’s resilience is attributed to the all‑inclusive cruise model, which captures most guest spending on onboard services such as excursions, specialty dining, wellness and retail, delivering higher margins than ticket sales alone.

Despite challenges from the pandemic and geopolitical tensions, cruise operators have continued to expand capacity and diversify offerings, ranging from budget itineraries to luxury voyages on ships that can accommodate more than 7,500 guests.
