Cruise industry trends highlight luxury and sustainable ship launches for 2027

The cruise industry is shifting toward specialized, luxury, and sustainable vessels, with several major launches scheduled for 2027. Key upcoming ships include the Oceania Sonata, an adult-only premium vessel, and the Windstar Star Explorer, a luxury yacht capable of navigating both seas and rivers. Other notable entries include the Regent Seven Seas Prestige and the boutique Oceania Aurelia.

River cruising is also seeing significant expansion with new vessels from AmaWaterways and Uniworld. The industry trend indicates a move away from sheer size in favor of increased space per passenger, smaller specialized ships, and access to niche ports and rivers.

In the luxury sector, MSC Group’s Explora Journeys has reached milestones with the Fincantieri shipyard for its fifth and sixth vessels, Explora V and Explora VI. These ships will utilize liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion and are designed to accommodate future transitions to synthetic biofuels and fuel cell technology to enhance energy efficiency.
