Cruz Azul delays official appointment of coach Joel Huiqui despite championship

Cruz Azul confirmed that Joel Huiqui, who guided the team to its tenth Liga MX title in the 2026 Clausura, will continue as head coach for the upcoming Apertura 2026 season. Club president Víctor Velázquez reiterated his promise to retain Huiqui after the title win, and a two‑year contract with an optional third year has reportedly been agreed, including a salary upgrade.

The official announcement is still pending because the club is finalising the composition of Huiqui’s technical staff. Reports say the remaining hurdle is reaching a mutual agreement on the backroom crew, which has delayed the formal signing of the contract.
