Cruz Azul faces performance decline and calls for squad competition

Cruz Azul is currently experiencing a period of instability in the Apertura 2026 tournament, recording four losses in the first nine matches. This performance marks a decline compared to previous seasons, such as the Apertura 2024, where the team led the general standings with 42 points and only one defeat.

Technical and defensive issues have been noted, including communication breakdowns in the defense and errors by goalkeeper Kevin Mier. Following the departure of Nicolás Larcamón during the Clausura 2026, Joel Huiqui took over coaching responsibilities.

In light of these results, former striker Tito Villa has emphasized the need for constant competition within the squad. Villa suggested that players, particularly non-Mexican players, must maintain high performance levels to secure their positions, noting that clubs with high aspirations must constantly evaluate player renditions to remain competitive.
