Cruz Azul faces Rocky Balboa superstition and hires mental performance coach ahead of Leagues Cup 2026
Cruz Azul’s squad arrived in Philadelphia before the start of the 2026 Leagues Cup and placed a club scarf on the iconic Rocky Balboa statue outside the city’s art museum. The gesture revived the local folklore that a "Rocky curse" causes visiting teams to lose after touching the monument, prompting jokes on social media but no evidence of any real effect on match outcomes.
At the same time, the Mexican club announced the addition of former Uruguayan goalkeeper Nicolás Vikonis to its technical staff. Vikonis will lead the new mental‑performance area under head coach Joel Huiqui, working on players’ psychological, emotional and cognitive skills to improve concentration, decision‑making and the ability to separate personal issues from on‑field performance.
