Gutiérrez caused controversy by appearing at the event and wearing América colors, an act that reportedly drew significant displeasure from the Cruz Azul management, specifically director Fernanda Pons.

Gutiérrez issued an open letter apologizing for the incident, comparing the mistake to an ‘own goal’ and citing his past history as an América player as the reason for his attendance. Despite his apology, reports indicate that the club leadership remained dissatisfied with the lack of prior notice.

Recent reports suggest that Gutiérrez may have already departed from the institution, as he was not seen at the team's training sessions on October 16. If his dismissal is finalized, Lupita Worbis is expected to take over the coaching duties for the remainder of the Apertura 2026 season.
