Cruz Azul plans departures and targets free‑transfer right backs for Apertura 2026
Defender Gonzalo Piovi, who helped Cruz Azul win the Liga BBVA MX, is rumored to be on the move. Reports link him with Inter Miami in the United States and several Argentine clubs, though no formal offer exists. Piovi’s contract runs until December 2028 and his market value is estimated at about €2 million (≈ US$2.5 million).
Ahead of the Apertura 2026, Cruz Azul’s management, led by Iván Alonso, is also scouting free‑transfer right‑backs. Five candidates are highlighted: former Real Madrid and Spain international Dani Carvajal, Japan’s Takehiro Tomiyasu, Turkey’s Zeki Celik, USA‑based Brooks Lennon, and Ghanaian Tariq Lamptey. The club aims to reinforce the position without paying a transfer fee.
