Cruz de los Caídos monument sparks heritage and memory dispute in Cáceres

A dispute has emerged in Cáceres regarding the 'Cruz de los Caídos' monument, as the Junta de Extremadura initiates a procedure to declare it a 'Bien de Interés Cultural' (BIC). This move aims to grant the monument heritage protection, a decision supported by the local Cáceres City Council and the regional government, who argue the monument was redefined in 1984 and serves as a significant urban landmark.

However, historical memory associations, including Armhex and Memoria de Futuro, are opposing the designation. These groups argue that granting heritage status is a political maneuver to bypass the national Democratic Memory Law. They contend that the monument, originally erected to honor those on the Nationalist side during the Civil War, remains a symbol of Francoist repression and should be removed from the Plaza de América as previously ordered by the Spanish Government.

Memorialist organizations have launched a signature campaign and plan to file formal allegations to contest the BIC status. The conflict coincides with Cáceres' candidacy to become a European Capital of Culture in 2031.
