Cruz Hewitt close to ATP debut at Washington 500 event

Seventeen‑year‑old Australian Cruz Hewitt, son of former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, advanced to the final round of qualifying at the ATP 500 DC Open in Washington. After a shortened victory over veteran Dusan Lajović, who retired while trailing 5‑2, Hewitt is one win away from reaching the main draw.

His run follows a strong junior season that included a final appearance at Wimbledon’s boys’ tournament. Watching from the stands, Lleyton Hewitt saw his son prepare to face top seed Zachary Svajda for the remaining qualifying spot, a match that would mark Cruz’s first appearance in ATP‑level competition.

The Washington tournament provides the young Australian with a chance to test himself against fully ranked tour players and potentially follow in his father’s historic footsteps on the professional circuit.
