Cruz Hewitt Wins First ATP Match at Washington Open

Seventeen‑year‑old Cruz Hewitt, the son of former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, earned his first ATP Tour main‑draw victory at the Washington Open (ATP 500). He defeated American Marcos Giron 6‑3, 6‑4 in just 74 minutes, becoming the youngest Washington winner since Kei Nishikori in 2007 and one of the few players born in 2008 or later to win at tour level.

Hewitt entered the tournament through qualifying, advancing after two opponents retired. The win lifts his ranking from around 612 to the mid‑300s and brings a prize of roughly $52,000 plus 75 ranking points. He will face the winner of Australian Alex de Minaur, the defending champion, and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round. Hewitt said the moment was “pretty surreal” and recalled his father’s advice to “enjoy each point and the atmosphere.”
