Crypto investors seek offshore trusts amid rising family office wealth
Wealthy cryptocurrency investors are increasingly seeking offshore trusts to facilitate estate planning and reduce inheritance tax exposure. However, trustees remain hesitant to accept digital assets due to concerns regarding price volatility, custody risks, and the difficulty of verifying the original source of funds.
While specialist screening tools can trace transaction histories, many trustees are reluctant to fulfill fiduciary duties involving crypto. Some clients opt to convert tokens into fiat currency before establishing trusts, though caution remains even with traditional currency.
Parallel to these shifts in asset types, the role of family offices is expanding to manage increasingly complex multi-generational wealth. Deloitte estimates that assets held by single-family offices will grow from $5.5 trillion in 2024 to a projected $9.5 trillion by 2030. Family offices serve to coordinate a family’s entire financial landscape, including investments, tax, property, and succession planning, providing a centralized accountability structure that individual advisors may lack.
