Crypto market shows significant performance dispersion in 2026
The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a sharp divide between average returns and median performance. Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan reported that while the average return for the top 20 crypto assets is up 14% year-to-date, the median return for that same group sits at a 15% loss.
This discrepancy suggests that a small number of high-performing assets, specifically Hyperliquid (HYPE) and Zcash (ZEC), are driving the positive average despite most large-cap tokens losing value.
Historical data from CoinGlass further illustrates market volatility. In the first quarter of 2026, Bitcoin saw a 22.2% decline, its weakest Q1 performance in eight years, while Ethereum fell by 32.17%. However, the market has also seen significant recoveries, such as Bitcoin gaining 42.71% in Q3 2026.
