Crypto sector faces unprecedented wave of 82 project shutdowns

Researcher Stacy Muur has documented 82 cryptocurrency projects and protocols that have reportedly shut down in 2026, a figure she described as unprecedented. The closures span various sectors, including decentralized finance (DeFi), blockchain infrastructure, and Web3 gaming.

Key reasons for these failures include insufficient user demand, dwindling funding, and inadequate revenue to cover operational costs. Some projects also ceased operations following major security breaches, such as Step Finance, which shut down after a treasury breach, and Radiant Capital, which stopped development after failing to recover from a multi-million dollar hack.

Data from DeFiLlama suggests that product-market fit issues and revenue shortfalls are primary drivers. The list of casualties includes notable names such as Balancer, Neon EVM, and the Ethereum layer-2 network Blast, which announced its shutdown after finding no credible path to economic viability despite previously attracting over $2 billion in deposits.
