Cryptocurrency hacks hit monthly record in August 2026

August 2026 saw a record 50 major cryptocurrency security incidents, marking a significant increase in attack frequency despite a decrease in total financial losses. According to blockchain security firm PeckShield, total losses for the month were estimated at approximately 136.3 million dollars, a 49 percent decline from the 270 million dollars lost in July.

The data indicates a shift toward more frequent but smaller-scale attacks. While the number of incidents rose by 67 percent compared to July, the average loss per incident dropped sharply from 9 million dollars to roughly 2.7 million dollars.

A single event dominated the monthly figures: an attack on the Tectonic lending protocol on the Cronos network. Attackers manipulated the governance token to attempt an extraction of roughly 74 million dollars. In response, Cronos validators halted block production after only about 6 million dollars had been bridged to Ethereum. The network was subsequently restored to a state prior to the attack, effectively trapping the majority of the stolen assets on the original chain.
