Cryptocurrency industry updates: CBDC trials, China blockchain plans, and security concerns

The cryptocurrency and blockchain sectors saw significant developments across global regulatory, technological, and security landscapes. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Innovation Hub in Hong Kong released a report on a central bank digital currency (CBDC) prototype designed to balance transaction anonymity with regulatory compliance, such as anti-money laundering requirements.

In China, the government announced plans to build a ‘National Blockchain Network’ as part of a policy to integrate the real economy with the digital economy. Meanwhile, the Stellar Development Foundation announced the integration of Chainlink’s price data feeds onto the Stellar network to enhance DeFi applications.

Security concerns emerged following reports that Ledger hardware wallets purchased through certain retailers, including MediaMarkt in Europe and CryptoBilis in Southeast Asia, contained unauthorized components capable of capturing recovery phrases. Additionally, the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) released a report indicating that nine major US banks maintained policies that could restrict financial services to certain sectors, including cryptocurrency businesses, based on political or religious beliefs.

On the market side, Bitwise characterized the third quarter of 2026 as one of the strongest in crypto history, noting increased ETF inflows. In the UK, a High Court ruling applied Chinese law to a claim regarding 61,000 BTC seized from a Chinese fraudster, potentially leaving the British government in possession of the assets.
