Ontario iGaming expansion reaches Supreme Court of Canada
The Supreme Court of Canada is reviewing a legal challenge regarding Ontario’s proposal to allow its regulated online gambling platforms to host games with international players.
The case, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, et al. v. Attorney General of Ontario, centers on whether Ontario’s plan complies with the Criminal Code requirement that provinces “conduct and manage” gambling within their own borders. Ontario argues that allowing players to compete against counterparts in other countries would help channel more activity toward provincially regulated sites.
Opponents, including government-owned lottery corporations from British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces, argue against this expansion. They contend that the court should not approve a dramatic expansion of online gaming to include foreign gamblers. A ruling in favor of Ontario could significantly expand the province's iGaming market, while a ruling against it could limit its growth efforts.
