Cryptocurrency market shows volatility with major liquidations
The cryptocurrency market experienced significant volatility and mixed performance between September 1 and September 2. Major assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum saw fluctuating prices, with Bitcoin showing periods of stability and slight gains while Ethereum faced downward pressure in certain sessions.
In the derivatives market, a massive liquidation event occurred, with approximately $341.2 million in positions liquidated over a 24-hour period. Long positions accounted for roughly 79% of this total, amounting to $270.96 million, primarily driven by price drops in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. However, recent hourly data indicated a shift where short liquidations briefly outpaced long liquidations during minor price rebounds.
Stablecoins such as Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) remained stable near the $1 mark, maintaining high trading volumes which suggests significant liquidity and investor readiness. While many altcoins like Ripple, BNB, and Cardano faced weekly declines, some assets like Monero and Zcash showed notable weekly strength. Market dominance shifted slightly between Bitcoin and Ethereum as capital moved between large-cap assets and various altcoins.
