Cryptocurrency market sees massive long position liquidations

The cryptocurrency derivatives market has experienced significant liquidations as Bitcoin (BTC) fell below the $80,000 mark. Within a 24-hour period, liquidations reached between approximately $97.8 million and $136.8 million, with long positions accounting for the vast majority of the volume—roughly 72% to 73% of the total.

In more acute periods, the concentration of long liquidations intensified. During a one-hour window, long positions represented approximately 96% of all liquidations. Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin were the primary assets affected; Ethereum saw significant liquidation volumes, with one large whale investor injecting $5.67 million in USDC to lower their liquidation price and avoid total loss on a $214 million long position.

Market data indicates that as Bitcoin dropped, liquidity for further liquidations remains concentrated in the $79,000 range. The decline in prices has also led to a reduction in total open interest across the digital asset derivatives market, signaling a contraction in leveraged positions.
