Cryptocurrency market sees nearly $1 billion in liquidations

The cryptocurrency market experienced significant volatility, resulting in nearly $1 billion in liquidated leveraged positions. This downturn was driven in part by uncertainty surrounding Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.

Bitcoin fell approximately 3.2% to the $81,000 level, while Ethereum saw a sharper decline of 6.4%, dropping to $2,350. Other assets also faced pressure, with XRP and Solana losing about 5.5%, and Dogecoin declining by roughly 6%. Zcash experienced a notable drop of approximately 13%.

Data from CoinGlass indicates that liquidations in Bitcoin and Ethereum futures accounted for roughly $483 million, with Ethereum liquidations ($286 million) surpassing Bitcoin ($197 million). Other liquidations included $31 million in Solana and nearly $19 million in Zcash.

Analysis from Santiment suggests that while the dollar value of open Ethereum positions decreased by approximately 11% between October 4 and October 14, the total amount of ETH in open positions remained relatively stable at approximately 6.23 million ETH. This indicates that the decline in dollar value was primarily due to price depreciation rather than a significant reduction in the number of active contracts.
