Cryptocurrency markets face inflation volatility and AI security concerns

The cryptocurrency market is facing volatility influenced by macroeconomic indicators and emerging technological concerns. Bitcoin (BTC) recently experienced a decline, dropping to approximately $80,300 following a rise in Brent oil prices and increased US ten-year Treasury yields, before stabilizing near $83,700. Upcoming US inflation data and retail sales figures are expected to be significant drivers for future price movements.

On the technical front, Justin Drake of the Ethereum Foundation has raised concerns regarding the potential for artificial intelligence to compromise cryptographic signatures, specifically the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) used by Bitcoin and Ethereum. This concern follows the release of 722 AI-generated mathematics manuscripts by OpenAI. While no direct evidence of a breach exists, Drake suggests a ‘bunker mode’ approach—moving funds to new addresses after each signature—and advocates for a long-term transition to hash-based cryptography to mitigate risks before quantum computing becomes a primary threat.

Additionally, the lack of privacy on public blockchains remains a barrier for institutional adoption. While the broader crypto market (excluding stablecoins) has seen declines, the value of privacy coins has risen significantly, reaching approximately $30 billion, as institutions seek ways to hide trades from competitors.
