United States announces new sanctions on Iran and considers China tariffs
The United States is considering a new 7.5% tariff on Chinese imports to counter industrial overcapacity. If implemented, this would bring total tariffs on Chinese goods to approximately 20%, ahead of a scheduled summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in late September.
Simultaneously, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced 'Operation Economic Outcast,' a major economic campaign targeting the Iranian regime. The sanctions expansion includes the cryptocurrency, gold, technology, aviation, and maritime sectors, with over 60 individuals, organizations, and vessels already added to the list. The Treasury has also warned of secondary sanctions against third-party countries that maintain trade relations with Iran.
In North America, trade tensions persist as President Trump announced plans to increase customs duties on Canadian imports—including cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel—to 50% starting January 1, 2027. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has signaled a one-for-one retaliatory response to these measures.
