Cryptocurrency trading volumes surge amid August market recovery

Cryptocurrency trading volumes saw a significant rebound in August 2026, signaling a potential shift from a bear market to a bull phase. According to data from CryptoQuant and CoinDesk Research, combined centralized exchange (CEX) trading volumes rose to $4.29 trillion, a 12.7% increase from July.

Spot trading activity reached approximately $75 billion on August 21, marking the second-largest session since February. This surge coincided with a 25% rally in Bitcoin, suggesting genuine buying interest rather than exit-driven volume. Major exchanges saw varied growth, with Binance handling $19.4 billion in spot volume, followed by Coinbase at $8 billion.

Derivatives markets also experienced substantial activity. Bybit reported its derivatives volume rose 14.9% to $321 billion in August. Total daily leverage volume reached roughly $336 billion on August 21, though analysts noted much of this was driven by short covering and liquidations. Additionally, real-world asset (RWA) perpetuals reached an all-time high with $602 billion in volume, reflecting growing interest in tokenized traditional financial assets.
