Crystal Dynamics adopts generative AI for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis
Crystal Dynamics is using generative AI tools to create early placeholder assets for the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Experience Director Jeff Adams explained that the AI‑generated visuals serve as quick concepts that are later refined through the studio's traditional pipeline, helping teams evaluate ideas before committing full resources. The workflow combines AI‑generated sketches with manual development to maintain artistic quality while accelerating the early stages of level design.
The game, slated for a spring 2027 release, will also bring back a three‑tiered difficulty system that separates combat, exploration and puzzle challenges, a feature praised by fans of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Developers confirmed they will re‑introduce the option to hide the iconic yellow climbing markers, giving players a more classic exploration experience reminiscent of the series' early titles.
