Crystal Lake prequel explores Friday the 13th origins
The prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’ has premiered on Peacock and Universal+, offering a new origin story for the Friday the 13th franchise. Starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, the eight-episode series explores the tragic events leading to the character's descent into violence.
Set in the early 1970s, the narrative focuses on the bond between Pamela and her young son, Jason Voorhees. The story depicts Jason’s struggle with bullying and his eventual drowning at Camp Crystal Lake due to counselor negligence. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane notes that the series revises established lore, such as redistributing the responsibility for the initial camp attacks and exploring the institutional horror surrounding the Voorhees family.
The production, developed with A24, utilizes practical effects and explores the psychological impact of grief on Pamela. While the series maintains familiar touchpoints from the original 1980 film, it introduces new elements, including the Argonaut project, to deepen the franchise's mythology.
