Crystal Lake series reinterprets Jason Voorhees origins

The new prequel series Crystal Lake, developed by A24 and Peacock, offers a scientific reimagining of the Friday the 13th mythology. The series introduces a genetic experimentation element to explain the superhuman capabilities of Jason Voorhees.

In the show, Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, is unknowingly subjected to experiments during her pregnancy as part of a secret program involving Project Argonaut and the Bellflower company. The goal of these experiments was to develop humans capable of surviving nuclear explosions by utilizing cockroach DNA for its extreme resilience. This modification is used to explain Jason’s exceptional strength, survival instincts, and accelerated growth under extreme stress, shifting the character's origins from the supernatural toward a biological explanation.

The eight-episode first season focuses on Pamela Voorhees following the tragic drowning of her son. The narrative follows her as she deals with the loss and the arrival of strangers investigating her past, which triggers a series of unsettling events.
