Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards injured, casting doubt on US World Cup squad

Defender Chris Richards suffered a left‑ankle injury after a collision with Brentford's Igor Thiago in Crystal Palace's 2‑2 draw on May 17. He was forced off just 29 minutes after coming on as a substitute and appeared in considerable discomfort, prompting emotional remarks as he left the pitch. Palace manager Oliver Glasner said the injury is swollen but expects Richards to return for the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27, though his fitness for the United States' 2026 World Cup opener remains uncertain.

In the same match, Palace centre‑back Chadi Riad also left early with a left‑leg injury, further weakening the team's defense and putting his participation in Morocco's World Cup squad in doubt. Separately, U.S. midfielder Brenden Aaronson, playing for Leeds United, was stretchered off with a left‑knee injury, raising additional concerns for the United States roster ahead of the tournament.

Both injuries come as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, with the United States set to host the event across three North American countries and Morocco preparing for its first appearance in the competition.
