CSA Group releases new standard for modular construction
CSA Group has released CSA Z251, a new National Standard of Canada for the design of volumetric modular structures. This framework provides a technical basis for buildings manufactured off-site as modules and assembled on-site.
Designed to complement the National Building Code of Canada, the standard covers structural performance, building services, environmental separation, fire protection, manufacturing, and architectural considerations. The initiative aims to provide architects, engineers, and building officials with consistent guidance to help scale the sector.
The modular construction industry in Canada is valued at over $5.5 billion and is projected to grow by more than 5% annually through 2029. The federal government has identified modular construction as a key method for delivering housing at scale through the Build Canada Homes program.
