Csaba Borboly acquitted in long-running Harghita corruption case

The Marosvásárhely Court of Appeal has issued a final ruling in the decade-long corruption case involving Csaba Borboly, the former president and current vice-president of the Harghita County Council. The court partially overturned a previous lower court decision, acquitting Borboly of charges including continuous abuse of office, incitement to abuse of office, and misleading judicial authorities.

The ruling also significantly alters the civil aspect of the case. While the lower court had ordered Borboly and four other defendants to pay 1,168,684 lei in damages to the Harghita County Council, the final decision did not rule on the civil claims, effectively nullifying that compensation requirement.

The case originated in 2013 when the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) charged 12 individuals regarding the improper payment of funds intended for road repairs. The investigation alleged that significant sums were paid to a road construction company controlled by a local council member, causing damages exceeding 4.8 million lei to the county. Following the verdict, Borboly claimed the proceedings were politically motivated.
