César Jáuregui detained for treason following CIA involvement in Chihuahua operation

César Jáuregui Moreno, the former Attorney General of Chihuahua, has been detained and transferred to the Altiplano maximum-security prison. He faces federal charges for treason to the fatherland following an April operation in El Pinal, Morelos, within the Sierra Tarahumara region.

The federal investigation by the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) alleges that Jáuregui allowed unauthorized CIA agents to intervene on Mexican territory during a mission to dismantle a drug laboratory. President Claudia Sheinbaum described the operation as “very irresponsible,” noting that the involvement of foreign agents violated national law and that the logistics, including a nighttime deployment on dangerous roads, were poorly managed.

The incident resulted in the deaths of two US agents and two Mexican officials during a vehicle accident. While Jáuregui also faces state-level charges for illegal exercise of public service and coalition, President Sheinbaum stated there is no evidence linking Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos to the unauthorized operation. The case has sparked political tension, with members of the PAN party calling for a defense of the former official and accusing the federal government of politicizing the justice system.
