César Teixeira appointed as new president of AIMA

César Teixeira, currently an administrator at the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), has been announced as the new president of the institution. The announcement was made by the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, during a parliamentary hearing.

Minister Leitão Amaro noted that the decision represents an evolution in the continuity of migration policy management, following what he described as “very positive” results under the outgoing president, Pedro Portugal Gaspar. While a transition date has not been set, Gaspar is expected to take on new public roles.

The Migration Technicians Union (STM) welcomed the appointment of Teixeira, acknowledging his career and expressing hope for more stable and predictable management. However, the union warned that the leadership change “does not erase the problems” of the agency. The STM highlighted ongoing issues including chaotic processes, lack of planning, exhausted staff, and a lack of institutional respect for workers, noting that these grievances recently led to a strike.
