CSDD Chairman Aivars Aksenoks to resign after massive data breach
A major cyberattack on Latvia's Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) has resulted in the theft of personal data belonging to approximately 1.2 million individuals and 200,000 legal entities. The stolen information includes names, personal identification codes, addresses, vehicle registration numbers, and payment details from the past 18 years.
CSDD Board Chairman Aivars Aksenoks announced he is prepared to resign following the incident, though he intends to remain in his position until the official investigation is completed to assist in preventing future occurrences. His decision follows pressure from President Edgars Rinkēvičs and Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, who characterized the breach as a significant national security threat.
Aksenoks noted that the IT infrastructure monitoring company, Tet, failed to detect or report the attack, despite being under contract to provide continuous supervision and incident monitoring. The breach was instead discovered by CSDD specialists themselves.
Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis has ordered a service audit to evaluate the accountability of CSDD leadership. Prime Minister Kulbergs also noted the possibility that the incident may have been a foreign hybrid attack targeting Latvia's critical infrastructure.
