CSIC research links housing insecurity to shorter life expectancy

Research from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) warns that housing insecurity and poor living conditions are directly linked to decreased life expectancy and increased health risks. The impact extends beyond homelessness to include individuals living in precarious, unhealthy homes or those facing severe difficulties meeting rent and mortgage payments.

Inadequate housing—characterized by issues such as humidity, extreme temperatures, poor ventilation, or pests—can trigger or worsen respiratory diseases, allergies, and cardiovascular problems. For those experiencing homelessness, the risks are compounded by continuous exposure to the elements, lack of hygiene, and difficulties accessing or storing medication.
