CSIRO hosts training on metal additive manufacturing certification
Industry and research professionals recently convened at CSIRO’s Lab 22 for a training course focused on the qualification and certification of metal additive manufacturing (AM). Delivered by the ASTM Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence and supported by AMCRC, the program addressed the standards and pathways required to certify metal AM parts for high-value sectors, including defense and aerospace.
The training specifically covered Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), emphasizing validation, verification, and the application of manufacturing standards. Experts noted that establishing reliable and repeatable processes is essential for integrating additive manufacturing into global supply chains and building end-user trust. Colin Hall, Research Director for Defense at AMCRC and Industry Professor at Adelaide University, identified the transition to qualified and certified processes as a critical factor for maturing Australia’s additive manufacturing capability and engaging with large-scale supply chains.
