CSIRO researchers unveil world's first quantum battery prototype
A research team led by James Quach at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has unveiled the world’s first working prototype of a quantum battery. Unlike conventional electrochemical batteries, which rely on chemical reactions, this quantum prototype utilizes the principle of superabsorption.
A defining characteristic of this technology is that it defies traditional charging logic: the battery charges faster as its size increases. The prototype was constructed using an optical microcavity, where organic dye molecules are placed between two mirrors separated by approximately 100nm. When irradiated with lasers, the light and matter form a hybrid state that enhances energy absorption.
While the prototype demonstrates rapid charging in the femtosecond range (10^-15 seconds) and energy storage for nanoseconds (10^-9 seconds), it currently only stores a few billion electron volts of energy. Researchers note that significant challenges remain before the technology can power everyday devices like smartphones or electric vehicles, as it must be able to store much larger amounts of energy for longer durations.
