CSM seeks protection for Ravenna prosecutors amid investigation

Members of the High Council of the Judiciary (CSM) in Italy have requested the opening of a procedure to protect the autonomy and independence of magistrates involved in an investigation in Ravenna. The request comes following intense public criticism directed at the Ravenna Prosecutor's Office regarding an inquiry into medical professionals.

The investigation, coordinated by prosecutor Angela Scorza, examines allegations of falsified medical certificates used to grant fitness clearances for migrants at repatriation centers (CPR). Several doctors, formerly working in the infectious diseases department of the Ravenna hospital, are under investigation for charges including forgery and interruption of public service.

Signatories of the CSM request argue that public statements from political figures and associations have characterized the judicial activity as a ‘witch hunt’ and a political operation aimed at finding ‘scapegoats,’ with some even invoking ‘Gestapo methods.’ The council members contend that such rhetoric does not merely critique legal interpretations but constitutes a generalized delegitimization of the judicial function, which could jeopardize the impartiality and serenity of the investigative office.
