CSN offers potential reductions for student loan repayments

Individuals in Sweden may be eligible to reduce their monthly student loan repayments through the Centrala studiestödsnämnden (CSN). For those experiencing financial hardship due to unemployment, reduced working hours, or other significant income changes, an application for reduction can be submitted.

For applicants aged 49 or younger, the new annual amount can be calculated as five percent of their total annual income. For those aged 50 and older, the calculation shifts to seven percent of income and may also include a portion of the applicant's assets. For example, a person under 50 with an annual income of 180,000 SEK could see their annual repayment set at 9,000 SEK, or approximately 750 SEK per month.

To qualify for an income-based reduction for the year 2026, the newly calculated annual amount must be at least 1,776 SEK lower than the original amount. Applicants are advised that approval depends on meeting specific conditions and that actual payment amounts may vary.
