CSS development evolves with new color modules and versioning proposals

Discussions are evolving within the web development community regarding the formal definition of CSS4 and the implementation of new CSS Color Modules. Jen Simmons has proposed that the CSS Working Group officially define a CSS4 version to help developers prioritize learning amidst the rapid release of new specifications.

Technical advancements include the CSS Color Module Level 4 and Level 5. These updates introduce new syntax for color functions, such as space-separated channels instead of the legacy comma-separated format, and support for an optional alpha parameter. The new specifications also introduce expanded color spaces like Display P3, Oklch, and LCH, which offer a wider and more vibrant color gamut than the traditional sRGB space.

While some argue that a major version bump would improve awareness and uptake of new features, others question how such a definition would be categorized. Currently, implementation of these experimental color specifications is limited, with Safari noted as having an implementation as of late 2022.
