Côte d’Ivoire authorizes 5G launch and seeks ITU Council seat

The government of Côte d’Ivoire has officially authorized the allocation of 5G frequencies to telecommunications operators. Announced by Djibril Ouattara, Minister of Digital Transition and Technological Innovation, the move aims to accelerate national connectivity, reduce latency, and support new digital services. This initiative is part of a 2026–2028 acceleration plan focused on internet connectivity, cybersecurity, and the development of ethical national artificial intelligence.

In a separate diplomatic effort, Côte d’Ivoire has formally submitted its candidacy for a seat on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the 2027–2030 period. During a preparatory meeting in Abidjan organized by the African Telecommunications Union, Minister Ouattara called for African unity to increase the continent's influence in global digital governance. The final elections for the ITU leadership will take place at the Plenipotentiary Conference in Doha, Qatar, in November 2026.
