Côte d’Ivoire bans paid remedial classes for students

The Direction des Écoles, Lycées et Collèges (DELC) in Côte d’Ivoire has issued a directive prohibiting teachers from soliciting or accepting payments from parents for remedial or reinforcement classes provided to their own students.

In a note dated October 1, 2026, the administration stated that this measure aims to uphold professional ethics and ensure that academic success is not dependent on a family's ability to pay for extra services. The policy seeks to preserve equality of access to learning and prevent financial disparities from creating advantages or disadvantages among students in the same class.

Instead of offering paid sessions, teachers are instructed to improve the quality and effectiveness of instruction during regular school hours. The administration emphasized that educators must focus on consolidating student knowledge and addressing learning difficulties within the established curriculum and official schedules.
