Côte d’Ivoire enforces zero‑tolerance ban on smoking in public places

Authorities in Côte d’Ivoire have intensified enforcement of the 2012 tobacco‑control decree, revised in 2025 to include hookah and electronic cigarettes. In Man, mixed police‑health teams began a “zero‑tolerance” operation, inspecting bars, restaurants and transport hubs, seizing shisha devices and warning owners that repeat violations could lead to closure.

Separately, a capacity‑building workshop was held in Toumodi, organized by the NGO CLUCOD and attended by municipal officials, security forces, transport unions and venue owners. The training aimed to improve application of the public‑smoking ban, clarify legal responsibilities and establish local monitoring mechanisms. The Ministry of Health estimates tobacco use causes about 5,000 deaths annually in the country.
