Côte d'Ivoire imposes six-month moratorium on gold mining
The Ivorian government has implemented a six-month moratorium on artisanal and semi-industrial gold mining authorizations. An order issued by the Minister of Mines on September 21, 2026, suspends new exploitation permits to combat illegal gold mining.
The measure aims to address fiscal losses, environmental damage, and health risks, particularly those associated with mercury use. During the suspension, administrative procedures for new authorizations are halted, though the renewal of existing, compliant sites remains permitted.
Local authorities, including prefects, have begun field operations to raise awareness. In Tiassalé, officials met with residents and fishermen near the Bandama River to discuss the impact of illegal mining, while in Koro, local leaders were warned about the consequences of clandestine activities.
